Longtime F.C. Resident Elmer Layman Dies

Longtime Falls Church resident Elmer Leonard “Snake” Layman, 95 of New Market, Va. died Jan. 11 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 2, 1913 in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Adam Russell and Lucy Florence Higgs Layman.

Mr. Layman lived in Falls Church for 60 years, and moved back to the Shenandoah Valley four-and-a-half years ago. He found “peace in the Valley”. He was in the poultry business in Washington, DC for 40 years before retiring.

He was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren near Endless Caverns. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Kemper-Macon Lodge in Falls Church.

His first wife, the former Gladys Virginia Whitmer whom he married May 17, 1939 preceded him in death April 30, 1970. His second wife, the former Frances Estelle Knight whom he married June 5, 1973 preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1996.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Nelson of New Market; a son, James Layman and wife Shirley of Purcellville, Va.; grandchildren, Michael Nelson, Wendy Layman Lewis and husband Allen; great grandchild, James “Jay” Lewis; a favorite niece, Lynda Starbird; a sister, Verna Putman of Seal Beach, Calif.; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Layman and a sister, Margaret Layman-Combs.

Rev. Lewis Armentrout conducted a funeral service at Fairview Church of the Brethren. Burial was in the church cemetery.
