George C. Marshall High School senior Jacqueline Hargrove concluded her championship season with a third-place finish in the 500m at the Virginia High School League AAA meet held in Charlottesville last Friday and Saturday.
Hargrove entered the meet ranked seventh, but running in the second to last qualifying heat, dropped over a second off her personal best time (1:17.65 to 1:16.62) to qualify for the championship heat. There, she finished behind Dominique Jordan (Woodside High School) and Bethany Hyter (Menchville High School) to claim third. The finish was an improvement over her 2004 fifth place finish, the last time Hargrove medaled at the state level.
The state medal concludes a strong season for the Marshall runner. She also claimed the Liberty District title in the 300m, 500m and shot put while leading the Statesmen to their first indoor crown in 11 years.
Fellow Marshall senior Shannon McVey posted her second-fastest time ever in the 55m, but her time of 7.41 was seven one-hundredths of a second too slow to qualify for the championship heat in the event. McVey captured the 55m title in the Liberty District Championships earlier this season.
The indoor season will conclude Saturday with Hargrove and Marshall junior Oscar Olazo competing at Nike Nationals in Landover, Md. on March 10.
