Marshall H.S. —  8 ,  Langley H.S. — 7

After last week’s heart breaking one-point loss, Marshall came up on the other side of the ball on Friday night, taking Langley’s homecoming game 8-7.

Down by an early Langley touchdown, junior running back Chris Hurlburt ran the ball into the end zone for a Statesmen score in the third.

“It was their homecoming…to have a tie would have played into their emotions,” said head coach J.T. Biddison. “I felt we needed to go ahead at that point in the game.”

The risk paid off for the Statesmen as sophomore quarterback Harold Sweet successfully stretched down the right side for the two point conversion. Sweet finished the day 5 of 12 for 47 yards in the air.

Despite the low scoring game Biddison praised the offensive effort.

“We are getting better.  We’re moving the ball better and had only one turnover,” he said.

Hurlburt was a key contributor to the ball movement; the running back rushing for 165 yards, the first 100 yard rusher in Biddison’s time at Marshall.  Seniors Ryan Goss and Frank Howell led the Statesmen’s passing attack, catching for 19 and 21 yards.

Senior Josh Segal rushed for 44 yards, including the Saxon’s lone touchdown. Junior quarterback Graham Dubow was held to just 17 yards passing and 20 rushing in a great defensive effort from Marshall.

Next up the Statesmen have a bye week before preparing for their own homecoming on Oct. 13 when McLean comes to town for a 7:30 kickoff.

The Statesmen hope the bye week will give them time to rest and avoid a homecoming loss.

“We have yet to win a homecoming in my 4 years here,” said Biddison.

“We need to stay focused for this game as McLean is always well coached.”

After Friday’s game, Marshall proved likewise.

McLean H.S. — 0,   Madison H.S. — 28

The Highlanders were unable to match Madison’s offense, held to a mere four yards rushing in Friday night’s 28-0 loss.  Aaron Lambert anchored the Rams offense, rushing for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  The loss drops the Highlanders to 0-4 on the season. McLean hopes to turn their luck around at home, when they take on Woodson H.S. at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Stuart H.S. — 0 ,    Yorktown H.S. — 62

The Raiders continue to struggle this season, losing 62-0 in a David-Goliath match with Yorktown on Friday night.  Led by Robbie Shivers, who ran for 177 yards for three touchdowns including an interception, the Patriots jumped out to an early 28-0 lead and never looked back.  Raiders senior quarterback Nick Childs led the team in rushing, picking up 30 yards on three carries.  He was also 4 for 9 in the air, but was contained by the Patriots defense. The Raiders continue to search for their first score of the season Friday night when they take on Jefferson at 7:30 p.m.  on their home turf.
