The J.E.B. Stuart High School girls varsity volleyball team upped their record to 5-7 on the year after a pair of recent wins over Marshall and Washington-Lee. The Raiders defeated the Generals Tuesday night in four games, 24-26, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22. Stuart had previously downed Marshall on Sept. 19, in a thrilling five-set match.

“I think the difference in that match was that the Stuart players finally decided to dig deep and win a close match,” Stuart Head Coach Sharon Ponton said. “[Earlier in the year] we took Fairfax to five games and left the gym knowing that we could have won — not a good feeling.”

The win against Marshall came just prior to the start of the Raiders’ National District schedule. Thus far, Stuart has been carried by sophomore Abby Voss, who leads the team with 49 kills and 21 blocks. Senior Carolina Apaza Pacheco leads the Raiders with 42 assists and a team-high eight service aces. Junior Gina Mansour and senior Karla Platzer pace the team in the digs category with 27 and 24 respectively.

Stuart next faces rival Falls Church High School at home Thursday, Oct. 5.

Marshall Field Hockey

The Statesmen lost a 3-1 contest to district rival W.T. Woodson on Tuesday night, curbing some of the momentum gained following a 4-0 win against South Lakes last Wednesday.

“We played pretty well,” Head Coach Christina Carroll said. “We just kept attacking up the left side and didn’t transition right enough.”

In Tuesday’s loss, Lauren Byrne scored her fifth goal of the season a minute and a half into the game, but the Statesmen could not make it stand up against the team they faced in both the district and regional finals last season.

Gina Cappiello scored her 18th of the year when she scored a pair in the 4-0 win over Herndon.
