Senior Bailey Walton continued to be a dominating presence at the net for the Mustangs, recording five blocks on the night, while senior setter Anna Lathrop routinely fed her teammates assists that resulted in a Mason point.

Those factors allowed the Mustangs to rebound from a slew of miscues that plagued them throughout the game, according to Mason Head Coach Rwaida Alshagra.

“In the two matches that we lost, the girls were not playing as much like a team and were making many individual mistakes that were only bringing their mental game down even more,” Alshagra said.
The Mustangs were particularly snake-bit in the service category, which Alshagra believes led to the team’s downfall in at least one of the games.

Nevertheless, a persistent effort gave the Mustangs a win Tuesday, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12.
The win over Clarke gives the Mustangs their second Bull Run District victory of the year and improves their division record to 2-3. That mark could have been reversed had a tooth and nail, five-game scrap at Madison County gone Mason’s way.

“They played better and more consistently as a team,” Alshagra said of the match at Madison County. “All in all the defense was more intense, serving percentage was up and there were more kills. Hopefully when Madison comes to Mason we can turn that game around with the same kind of intensity.”

The Mountaineers won’t make the return trip to Mason High until October 23. Between now and then, the Mustangs will square off against Manassas Park on the road on Thursday, Oct. 11 and Rappahannock at home next Tuesday, Oct. 16. Mason also faces the Rams of Strasburg on the road October 18.
