Gov. McDonnell Updates Emergency Plans As New Blizzard Approaches Virginia Print E-mail
Monday, February 08 2010 05:56:08 PM

In advance of another blizzard arriving Tuesday that forecasters now predict could dump another 20 inches of snow on top of last weekend's record storm, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell updated today the existing State of Emergency that's been in effect since last week.

The declaration of a State of Emergency permits state agencies to assist local governments in response to extreme weather or other conditions. Thus, the governor's announcement authorizes state agencies to identify and position resources for quick response anywhere they are needed.

According to the governor's office, the priorities include the role of the State Police and VDOT to keep roadways clear and assist motorists, the deployment of the Virginia National Guard where needed and the continued full operation of the Virginia Emergency Operations Center that has been in full mobilization since last Friday. Virginians are encouraged to have an emergency kit in their home and vehicle that includes water, food, a battery-powered radio, blankets, flashlight and extra batteries. Citizens should monitor news outlets for updates on the developing storm, and check road conditions before they leave home by calling 511 or logging in to 511Virginia.org. Information about shelters can be received by calling 211. For emergencies call 911.
