F.C. Council Rejects Fairfax Settlement Offer, Makes Counter-Offer

Emerging from an hour-long closed session Monday night, the Falls Church City Council convened in public session and voted immediately on a motion by Councilman Lawrence Webb and seconded by Councilman David Snyder "to reject the counter-offer from the Fairfax County Water Authority...as stated in its letter dated May 21, 2009, and to make an offer" to the Fairfax disputants in the current legal dispute between the parties. ‘Relay for Life’ Raises $166,000, Exceeds Fundraising Goal

Organizers of the annual “Relay for Life” in Falls Church said that all expectations were exceeded at the all-night event held on the football field at George Mason High School last weekend. Over 850 participants raised over $166,000 to support the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer, doubling last year’s total. A closing ceremony will be held this Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. in the cafetorium at the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, 7124 Leesburg Pike.

F.C. Schools’ ‘Challenge Days’ Benefit Sunday

An “Evening of Operatic Arias and Duets,” a benefit to help bring the diversity-affirming “Challenge Days” program to Falls Church’s Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School for the first time this fall, is being hosted by News-Press Owner Nicholas Benton at the home of F.C. School Board Chair Ron Peppe, 606 Highland Ave.,  this Sunday, June 7, at 6 p.m. Performers from the Levine School of Music, the music faculty of the F.C. City Schools and George Mason High will entertain, and wine, cheese and snacks will be served. “Challenge Days,” which is in its fourth year of challenging students at George Mason High, are touted nationally as one of the most effective ways for teenagers to address and overcome fear and hatred of “differences,” to deter taunting and bullying and grow respect and appreciation for differences based on race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation or physical characteristics. F.C. Seeks Volunteers for Watershed Advisory Group

Volunteers to work on the newly-constituted Falls Church Watershed Advisory Committee are being sought by City Hall. The group is tasked to provide input on the development of a watershed management plan, working with the consulting firm, AMEC, Inc. Future F.C. School Options Report Due Tuesday

A consultant retained by the Falls Church School Board to conduct a facilities study and assess options ranging from renovations to major new construction will present the results of the study, along with recommendations, at next week’s meeting of the School Board on Tuesday, June 9, at 7 p.m. in the Council chambers at City Hall. The public is invited to attend and to make comments.
