It's 8 p.m. on this Saturday night in Falls Church, just an hour or so after Mother Nature finished dumping upwards of 20 inches of snow in what this editor is confident to say was the biggest single snowfall accumulation, at least around his house, in his 25 years living in this community.

In the midst of the most severe recession since the 1930s, Falls Church City is facing arguably the most difficult budget cycle in its history. As our community begins to focus in earnest on the budget, it is heartening to see our citizens, city staff, and elected officials noticeably increase the level and quality of their civic participation.

It was instructive and underscored by the timely appearance at the Falls Church High School of U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan Tuesday, that even in the time of great fiscal distress and revenue shortfalls, the Obama administration's budget unveiled this week proposes a significant increase in funding for education.

Fairfax County's Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team (VA Task Force #1 or VATF-1) came home safe and sound from Haiti last week. An enthusiastic crowd of family members and friends welcomed the 114-member team, plus several canines, at two ceremonies: one upon landing at Dulles International Airport, and another at the fire academy campus on West Ox Road on Thursday.
