FIRSTfriday Rings in Month of June

On Friday, June 5, the City of Falls Church will celebrate FIRSTfriday for the month of June. Festivities include, but aren’t limited to, dining deals, art showings, entertainment and more.

There will be an art show – along with free ice cream – at Art & Frame (111 Park Ave., Falls Church) from 6 – 8 p.m., featuring new contemporary still life and figurative works in oil by local artist Denise Philipbar. An artist talk with Philipbar will take place at 7:15 p.m. For more information, call 703-534-4202.

Falls Church Resident Accepted to Edinboro

Neal Cobert of Falls Church, who currently attends McLean High School as a senior, has been accepted into Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. There, Cobert plans on majoring in Computer Graphics. Cobert is the son of Robert and Dana Cobert, also from Falls Church.

Del. Jim Scott to Address McLean Rotary Meeting

Del. Jim Scott will speak about “Legislative Happenings” at the McLean Rotary Club meeting on Tuesday, June 9 at noon. Falls Church Firefighters Bartend for Good Cause

The Falls Church Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fundraiser this Sunday, June 7 at Clare & Don’s Beach Shack (130 N. ‘Applause Unlimited’ Kids Series Continues

Applause Unlimited, a series of performance workshops presented by the McLean Community Center (MCC) (1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean), continues Saturday, June 6 at 2 p.m. with “Tale of a Mysterious Land.” Narrated and performed with hand and rod puppets, masks and simple props, three stories will demonstrate the rich ethnic diversity of Chinese folklore. Interfaith Concert Benefits Needy of McLean

On Sunday, June 7, a first of its kind Community Benefit Concert will be held at Charles Wesley United Methodist Church (6817 Dean Dr., McLean). This interfaith concert is a way to support those in need in the greater McLean area.

The Washington Plaza Baptist Church Choir will be performing, along with the Charles Wesley United Methodist Church Choir.

Donations and contributions of baby diapers and wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, hand and dish soap, toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent and other common-use, non-perishables items will be taken during this event in support of Share, Inc., an all-volunteer charitable organization that meets the emergency needs of the less fortunate in McLean, Great Falls, Pimmit Hills and surrounding areas.

Summer Swing Dance First of Many

In the wake of the popularity of such shows as “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” the McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean) is offering the first of what it hopes will be several community dances.

LOCAL DANCERS from the O’Neill-James School of Irish Dancing participated in the 2009 World Championships of Irish Dancing, known as the “Oierachtas Rince Na Cruinne.” They are among 100 dancers who attend classes held throughout the year at the Falls Church Presbyterian Church and at the Knights of Columbus in Arlington. Area residents can experience a slice of the Emerald Isle by attending the O’Neill-James School Recital, being held this Sunday, June 7 at Bishop Denis J. A Summer Swing Dance will be held from 8 – 11 p.m. on Friday, June 5, in the Center’s Community Hall. Tickets are $25 for couples who are McLean tax district residents, $15 per person for individual tax district residents, and $25 per person for all others. Susan Trout Speaks at Forever Young Luncheon

Forever Young, a Fairfax County Cable TV program, held its monthly luncheon this past Monday, June 1. Speaker and author Susan Trout, Ph.D., spoke about her book Born to Serve: The Evolution of the Soul Through Service.

Author Speaks on Book over Lunch

The Shepard’s Center of Oakton-Vienna will host a Lunch N’ Life event on Monday, June 8 from noon – 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church (2589 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean). Local College Students Graduate, Receive Honors

Andrew Campanelli of Falls Church received a Bachelor of Science from the College of Music & Fine Arts, and graduated magna cum laude, from Loyola University in New Orleans, La. Marietta College student Thomas Daniels of Falls Church has been named to the dean’s high honors list for the spring 2009 semester. Daniels, a graduate of Trinity School at Meadow View, is majoring in theatre and political science at Marietta.

Falls Church resident Olivia Scott was named to the dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester at Messiah College. Scott, a junior, is currently studying under an undeclared major.

Additional Falls Church residents, William Andrew Henneberg, Kelly Elizabeth O’Brien, Kimberly Anne Slaybecker, Fumika Ueta and Kyle Daniel Yolles all received bachelor degrees recently from the University of Mary Washington.

From Alexandria, Michael Robinson was awarded a Bachelor of Art from SUNY Cortland in New York. Other local graduates from Alexandria included Theresa Christine Gleason, Lauren Grace Szelenyi and Heather Walton, all of whom received master’s degrees in Curriculum & Instruction from McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. Also, Jennifer Williams of Alexandria graduated from Widener University’s School of Nursing on May 15 during a traditional Nightingale Ceremony.
