Community News & NotesYee’s Tree Tale To Hit the ShelvesAlexandria author Linda Yee, has just reached a wonderful milestone with the publication of her book, Big Red Things by RoseDog Books. Yee first wrote the manuscript for the children’s book, which details the development and education of a tree living in a field, when she was in high school. Ms. Yee lives in Alexandria with her husband Steve and two daughters Shasta and Hannah. Congratulations to her on the milestone.
MEH Middle School Hosts Hoops History EventThis Sunday, take two hours to learn about the African American experience during basketball’s first 100 years at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School (7130 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church). Special guests like Phillip J. Merrill (author of The Art of Collecing Black Memorabilia), Bijan C. Bayne (author of the award-winning Sky Kings: Black Pioneers of Professional Basketball) and Bob Kuska (author of Hot Potato: How Washington and New York Gave Birth to Black Basketball and Changed America’s Game Forever) discuss the topic from 3 – 5 p.m. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. The event also features the world premiere of the video “Basketball More than a Game, the Story of E.B. Henderson.” Henderson, a Falls Church native, is credited with bringing the game of basketball to Washington, D.C. He was nominated for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, however he was not chosen as a finalist for this particular induction class.

Leaders Sought for McLean CenterFour adult and two youth positions are open on the McLeanCommunity Center’s 2006-07 governing board and district residents who have a proven record of leadership and community service to enter the race for a seat. The board sets policy and provides general oversight for MCC facilities and programs, which include the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and the Old Firehouse Teen Center on Chain Bridge Road. Forms are available beginning Feb. 27 at the Community Center ( 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean).

U Miami Honors NOVA Businessman with InstituteNorthern Virginia businessman Dr. Johnson A. Edosomwan was recently honored by the University of Miami when an institution was named in his honor. On Tue. Feb. 14, Miami announced the establishment of the Dr. Johnson A. Edosomwan Leadership Institute at the university.

ExxonMobil Engineers Drive for Young RecruitsIn an effort to introduce girls to the field of engineering, ExxonMobil is sending engineers to local middle schools to raise awareness of the field among female students. Currently, engineers are scheduled to visit Luther Jackson Middle School Feb. 27, March 6 and March 13, and Kilmer Middle School on March 3.
