Spring Sports BriefsMason Girls Lacrosse The George Mason High School girls varsity lacrosse team topped arch-rival Falls Church High School by a slim 5-3 margin Monday night under the lights of Moore Cadillac Stadium. Mason junior midfielders Kaity Hauter and Emily Walden dominated the middle of the pitch, recording five takeaways each. Sophomore Mary Kate Cummings led all scorers with four goals for the Mustangs. Mason junior Kristin Schwind also contributed a goal, beating her cousin, Falls Church High goalie Colleen Schwind in the process. Colleen Schwind turned in a solid performance, limiting the Mustang offense to the best of her abilities and recording 15 saves. In the faceoff circle, senior Lena Griffin won more than half of the draws for the Mustangs. Prior to the Falls Church game, the Mustangs fell 6-5 to Robert. E. Lee High School Thursday, March 31. Despite the loss, Mason Head Coach Barb Mahony was encouraged by her team’s progress since last season. In 2004, the Mustangs suffered a 12-4 loss to Lee. Mahony also sited the play of Katie Bugg controlling ground balls. Cummings again led Mason with three goals. Schwind and Griffin added solo goals. Mason next faces Madeira at home Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Jaguars of Falls Church next take the field at Mt. Vernon on Friday at 7:15 p.m. McLean Boys Lacrosse The McLean High School boys lacrosse team used a four-goal fourth quarter to break open a one-goal game against West Springfield Thursday, March 31. Leading 7-6 entering the final period, Highlander seniors Danny Houck and Jeremy Bussard added individual goals to a pair by senior Peter Haig to clinch the win. Haig and Bussard each recorded a hat trick on the day. McLean struck first on goals from Bussard and A.G. Winchester in the first quarter. A goal by Casey Fry off a pass from All-Region attackman Robbie Triplett pushed the lead to 5-2. West Springfield closed the gap to 5-4 at halftime and 7-6 with two more goals in the third quarter. Triplett and Stephen Stover accounted for the other Highlander goals, while Bryan Barrett scored four times for West Springfield. The win pushes McLean’s record to 3-0. After a rainout Saturday, the Highlanders next travel to face rivals Langley Tuesday, April 12. The opening faceoff is set for 7:15 p.m. Mason High Baseball The George Mason High School varsity baseball team dropped an 8-1 contest to Washington and Lee Monday, dropping the team’s overall record to 1-2. “We had some mental and physical breakdowns in the second and fourth innings that accounted for all of Washington and Lee’s runs,” Mason Head Coach Adam Amerine said. “We just need to continue to make the routine plays and not give our opponents, especially ones of W-L’s quality, extra outs and we will have better results. Mason Boys Tennis The George Mason High School boys varsity tennis team took its game to another level Tuesday, defeating last year’s AAA National District Champion J.E.B. Stuart by a score of 5-4 Tuesday. Among the winners were Alex Goetting (10-4), Daniel Lim (10-7) and Andrew Roller (10-1). Goetting and Xavier Alarcon (10-7) and James An and Lim (10-6) both won their doubles matches. Alex Goetting currently sports a 10-1 individual record this season. “I know we had won the state title last year, but I believe we are an even better team this year,” Head Coach Dan Wilkie said.
