GMHS Girls Top Central WoodstockBy Mike Hume After rain washed out the Wakefield game March 28, the George Mason High School girls soccer team won its season-opener with a 6-0 shutout Wednesday, March 30 over Central Woodstock. Senior co-captain Rachel Sweeney opened the scoring for the 2005 season just five minutes into the game, sending a pass from Jessie Porzel into the back of the net. Sweeney was soon joined in the scoring column by senior co-captain Christina Kirkbride. It would be the first of two goals for Kirkbride on the day, the second coming on a well-struck direct kick from 30 yards out just before the end of the first half. In her first high school game, freshman Annie Zweighaft netted to goals, and sophomore Roxanne Sweeney rounded out the scoring ledger with a second-half goal off a cross from junior forward Julie Dorsey. Dorsey found her teammate after fighting off two defenders in front of the Central Woodstock goal. Sweeney, started the game as the Mustang goalie. “Roxy is a versatile athlete and capable of playing every position on the field effectively,” Head Coach Cliff Carroll said. “In general we performed well as a team. Hopefully we can continue to build on this performance.” The Mustangs travel to face Washington and Lee Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m.
