Mustangs Split Pair at Edison Tourney

By Mike Hume

The George Mason High School baseball team emerged from the Edison Challenge tournament with a two-game split, falling to AAA Edison in the first game 19-8 before besting Falls Church High School 6-1.

Despite the lopsided final score, Mason Head Coach Adam Amerine was pleased with his team’s effort for the first five innings of the Edison Game. In the fifth, Edison’s potent offense kicked into high gear and turned what had been a back and forth shootout into a one-sided affair.

“The wind was blowing out and they got under more balls than we did,” Amerine said. “We were beating a AAA district favorite and their best pitcher until their offensive depth caught up with us and took over the game.”

Junior Paul Mene hit the first home run of his Mason career in the loss.

The antithesis of the Edison game, Mason held the Jaguars of Falls Church to just one run as junior Matt Foley went the distance in his first start of the year for the Mustangs. Sophomore Byron Mendenhall and junior Eric Blush each homered for Mason and junior Brandon Ting went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate to provide the Mustangs with the run support needed for the victory. Tony Collins’ solo shot off Foley accounted for the Jags’ only run.
