Big Honors in Big Apple

Last week at the 81st Annual Scholastic Convention at Columbia University in New York, student publications and journalists from Fairfax County were awarded by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Robinson Secondary School, Chantilly High School, Rocky Run Middle School, Westfield High School and Annandale High School were all awarded for their yearbooks. The winners of individual Gold Circle awards from Fairfax County Public Schools were Kathleen Grice, Tricia Sangalang and Sadia Latifi of Hayfield Secondary School, Steph Wesolowski of McLean High School, Antonia Truscott of Oakton High School, Lauren Orsini, Ara Mutcher, Meredith Jordan and Meagan Gallivan of Chantilly High School.

Student Art Displayed

Wednesday, March 30 Madison High school unveiled its new art gallery. The gallery features artwork from all Madison art students as well as students attending Madison pyramid schools.

The Benefits of Diversity

Thursday, March 31, Eileen Kugler, author of Debunking the Middle Class Myth… Why Diverse Schools Are Good for All Kids, will give a special presentation on diversity at West Potomac High. Kugler will discuss the ways that many school leaders have built diverse schools that have become the driving forces for developing strong multicultural communities beyond the school walls.

Lang Accredited by IIB

Congratulations to Northern Virginia businessman Jonathan Lang who has received accreditation by the Institute for Independent Business. Mr. Lang’s mission will be expanding the Institute’s presence in the City of Falls Church and Arlington and Fairfax Counties.

Island Creek Displays Art

This Thursday, March 31 there will be a gallery of student artwork on display at Island Creek Elementary during Fine Arts Night. Art created by students in preschool through sixth grade will be featured.

Students Observe Autism Awareness

Autism awareness month will be observed at Washington Mill Elementary beginning on April 1. Students will receive temporary tattoos depicting the logo for autism, and staff members will wear autism ribbons throughout the month. The program is an effort to expose the entire school community to challenges faced by students with autism, moving beyond the classrooms into which autistic children are mainstreamed.

Local Students to Compete in Geography Bee

Several FCPS students plan to compete in the 2005 Virginia Geographic Bee, scheduled for Friday, April 1, in Norfolk. Fifth grade student Scott Nordstrom will represent White Oaks Elementary; seventh grade student Isaiah Manalo will represent Sandburg Middle school; and fifth grade student Rohith Amuthier will represent Oakton Elementary.

McLean Lax Award Established for Fallen Alumnus

The McLean High school boys varsity lacrosse team has established an award to honor former McLean student and lacrosse player Alexander Wetherbee, who was killed in action on September 12, 2004, in Iraq. Wetherbee, a U.S. Marine Corps platoon commander, graduated from McLean in 1995. The award will honor a senior lacrosse player for leadership, dedication, and commitment to improvement in honor of Wetherbee’s work ethic as a student athlete. At the first home game of the season for McLean lacrosse team on Saturday, April 2, the team coaches will participate in a special ceremony in honor of Wetherbee, including a Marine honor guard and presentation of a plaque to Wetherbee’s family and the school.

FCPS Students Nab Historical Honors

Congratulations to students from Fairfax County public schools that captured top honors in 9 of 14 categories at the Northern Virginia regional competition of National History Day held recently at George Mason University. Bowman on List of Leaders

Bowman Consulting Group, Ltd., the fastest-growing engineering firm in the mid-Atlantic region, was named to the Virginia Business “List of Leaders”- which tracks the state’s biggest companies in 16 sectors and shows which companies are on the rise. This is the third-consecutive year that Bowman has been honored in the architectural and engineering firms category.

Diabetes Event Seeks Volunteers

McLean Republican Women Host Speaker

Thursday, April 21 the Greater McLean Republican Women (GMRW) will host Ms. Olivia Jenney at its monthly breakfast meeting. Ms. Jenney will address the GMRW on the history of the Republican Party in Virginia. The breakfast will be held at Kazan Restaurant in downtown McLean, starting at 8 a.m. The cost is $12.00 per person and reservations are required. Used Book Sale on Horizon

The Falls Church AAUW used book sale will be in the Falls Church Community Center at 223 Little Falls Street, on Friday April 8 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday April 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The AAUW book sale raises money for scholarships for women.

More Soccer Tryouts Announced

Cugini Perugia 95, a U9 boys traveling soccer team, is holding tryouts at Baron Cameron Park, Reston, Wednesdays and Fridays. Lasso Tees Up at Golf Academy

Ben Lasso, a former member of the George Mason High School golf team for two years, is a sophomore high school student at the International Junior Golf Academy and Heritage Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Ben has participated in a series of golf tournaments and will travel to Orange Lake Resort in Kissimmee, Florida and Royce Brooke Golf Club in Hillsborough, New Jersey to compete in more tournaments this April.

McCullough Transplants to Transplant Consortium

Washington Regional Transplant Consortium, the organ and tissue procurement organization for the D.C. area, has hired Mark McCullough to serve as the organization’s Public Affairs Associate, just in time for the National Donate Life Month in April.

Stuart Student Slack Honored by Arts Society

Congratulations to Schuyler Slack of Stuart High School who was recently named one of eight winners in the Level I category at the Washington Performing Arts Society’s 34th Annual Joseph and Goldie Feder String Competition. Slack, who plays bass, was one of three students named a summer scholarship recipient.
