Mustang Girls Lax Victorious

By Mike Hume

After a flurry of late-game lead changes, the George Mason girls varsity lacrosse team kicked its 2005 campaign off with a near-win over George C. Marshall High School, 9-8. The victory was the first game played by the lady laxers under the lights of Moore Cadillac Stadium, and also marked the first time the Mustangs have beaten the Statesmen in five years.

The lead changed hands four times in the final 10 minutes of play before the Mustangs could secure the win.

Sophomore Mary Kate Cummings led the Mason attack with four goals, while junior Kristin Schwind added two and two assists. Juniors Emily Bowditch and Emily Walden and sophomore Katie Bugg all added one goal apiece. Senior Lean Griffin led the team with five ground balls. In the cage, junior Lauren Moore recorded five saves en route to the win.

Mason faces Washington and Lee at home today.
