Arlington Soccer Signups
The Arlington Soccer Association is starting registration for the spring youth soccer season in Arlington and Falls Church . Games for boys and girls games, ages 7 and above, begin April 9, and April 16, for children under 7. Congratulations to Samuel Bonner and Jacob Farmer, both graduates of McLean High School, who earned dean’s list honors for the 2004 fall semester at Lynchburg College.
Chipping for Charity
The Food for Others Second Annual Golf Tournament will be held Monday, May 16 at the Herndon Centennial Golf Course and is looking for participants for a Four Person, Captain’s Choice style tournament. Food for Others is a nonprofit food bank and food rescue operation, working to help persons living in poverty in Northern Virginia. Before April 30, the cost is $400 per foursome and $100 per individual. After April 30, the cost is $475 per foursome and $125 per individual. Registration opens at noon and there is a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Bargain Book Sale
The Falls Church Area American Association of University Women (AAUW) is holding its annual Used Book Sale on Friday, April 8 from 9 am to 9 pm, and Saturday, April 9 from 9am to 4 pm at the Falls Church Community Center. Bargain hunters are urged to come Saturday for half-price specials..

Coaches v. Cancer Total Announced
The boys basketball programs from Marshall and Langley High Schools have announced a huge success in their Coaches v. Cancer Night, previously reported by the News-Press Feb. 10. The efforts of the fundraising crew resulted in more than $6,800 in donations to the American Cancer Society, almost double the amount raised in 2004. On behalf of coaches Kevin Weeren and Brian Doyle, thank you to all those who contributed to the cause.
Hull Secures Funds for Tinner Hill
Delegate Bob Hull (D – 38th) recently secured a $7,500 grant for the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation. The grant was included in the 2006 fiscal year budget that passed the House of Delegates by a 92-1 vote and was approved by a 40-0 margin in the Senate of Virginia, Feb. 26. Delegate Hull helped Falls Church by amending a bill that will allow the City to establish an arts and cultural district.
F.C. Art Abounds
The first Friday of the month saw a barrage of artwork in downtown Falls Church, as the Falls Church Arts Organization sponsored art exhibitions at downtown businesses. The Bread House, Broad Street Grill, Stacy’s Coffee Parlor and Starbucks displayed the works of painter Linda Larochelle, and photographers Peter Tomlinson, and Kendall Barrett. Meanwhile, participants got down at a poetry jam, held at Starbucks.
In other arts news Falls Church Arts, welcomed in new board member Jane Scully, who will be focusing on public relations for the non-profit organization, dedicated to promoting art and artists in the Falls Church Community.
Rep. Davis Leading Steroid Probe
here are no formal charges yet, but Representative Tom Davis, of Virginia ’s 11th district, is prepared to play hardball over alleged steroid allegations among professional baseball players. “We hope subpoenas won't be necessary, but we are prepared to move forward with subpoenas [Wednesday] if we receive information that witnesses are not willing to appear voluntarily,” Davis’ spokesperson David Marin said to ESPN.com. Congressman Davis is chairman for the House Government Reform Committee.
