GM's hoover Crowned Champion By Mike Hume
With a convincing 5-0 victory over Manassas Park’s Sergio Chavez, who is the number one ranked wrestler in the state in Single A, Willie Hoover was crowned the Bull Run District Champion at 152 lbs. this past weekend. Hoover’s victory capped a fine weekend’s effort by the entire Mustang squad and he will lead a contingent of seven wrestlers into the upcoming Region B Wrestling Tournament this weekend at Manassas Park High School.
Hoover, who was wrestling for the first time since sustaining a concussion in a Feb. 5 match, advanced to the finals with a 17-11 decision over Mike Darnell of Madison County. In his finals match up with the top ranked Chavez, Hoover capped an action-filled first period by taking the Cougar star to his back and nearly pinning him, before settling for 5 points which he made stand up by controlling Chavez handily the rest of the match. It was the Mustang’s lone championship of the evening but 6 other wrestlers finished in the top 4 in their weight classes to advance.
Tash Khan avenged an early season loss, winning by decision James Jewet of Madison County for third place at 119, and John Sullivan took third at 171. Nick Pitas, Mike Coleman, Ramsey Hanna, and Rick Schumann placed fourth in their classes to earn the right to advance to the next level.
The Region B Tournament will be held this Saturday at Manassas Park High School starting at 10 a.m. The top four place finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament in Salem, Va. March 4-5.
