Mustang Girls Get By Manassas Park

By Mike Hume

The George Mason High School girls basketball team bested district foe Manassas Park last Friday, coming out on top 47-40. The win improves the Mustangs’ record to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in the Bull Run District.

While the shooting wasn’t quite on par with recent performances for Mason, junior Maggie O’Toole led the team with 16 points, while freshman Meredith Hamme added 12.

“We were a little tired in the game due to a long week of exams that these girls had to prepare for and take,” Mason Head Coach Dan Wilkie said. “But they found the energy in the third quarter to go ahead by 17 points and really crush the hopes of Manassas Park. Although Manassas did not give up and fought to the final buzzer.”

Since the beginning of January O’Toole has averaged 17 points per game, while Hamme has averaged 10 points per game over that same span. “We were a tired team and many girls, and myself, wanted the week to end so we could take a break, which the team deserved,” Wilkie said. “We are now rested and ready to go against Madison County.” Freshman Annie Zweighaft added six points in the Manassas win.

Results for Wednesday night’s game against Madison County were not available at press time. The Mustangs face Clarke County on Friday.
