As Journal Departs, News-Press Boosts Circulation Past 30,000By Nicholas Benton
With the Journal Newspaper organization abandoning Northern Virginia as its primary coverage area for the first time since its founding 70 years ago, the Falls Church News-Press announced this week its latest circulation increase, to go into effect immediately.
As the Northern Virginia Journal, under new ownership, morphed into the Washington Examiner beginning this Monday, the News-Press' circulation will move above the 30,000 mark for the first time. Neighborhoods in the Bailey's Crossroads section of greater Falls Church will be added to the free home delivery of the paper starting this Thursday, bringing the audited circulation total to 30.108.
Since its founding in March, 1991, the News-Press' circulation has grown steadily from 7,400. It is now, by far, the highest circulation newspaper in the five zip codes constituting the City of Falls Church and Greater Falls Church areas of Fairfax County, outstripping all competitors by a wide margin, including dailies.
Later this year, the paper will expand into the Eastern Falls Church section of Arlington County.
"With the abandonment of Northern Virginia as its primary coverage area by the new owner of the Journal Newspapers, the continued measured expansion of the News-Press in this important segment of Northern Virginia becomes ever more vital for not only the reading public, but for businesses here that need affordable and effective advertising opportunities," said Nicholas F. Benton, owner-editor of the News-Press.
Even prior to its latest circulation increase, the 2005 Directory of Virginia Newspapers published by the Virginia Press Association listed the Falls Church News-Press as having the fourth-highest circulation of any non-daily VPA member newspaper in the state.
Other upgrades at the News-Press announced this week include the following:
All multiple-insertion display or Business and Service Directory advertising contracts include a free listing in the paper's Business Phone Listing.
A new Business and Service Directory section offers smaller businesses an affordable and attractive way to advertise their products and services.
More opportunities for advertising discounts will be included in a new discount schedule that ranges from 5% for six insertions to 25% for 52.
A newly-designed web site will be operational later this month that will not only be more attractive and user-friendly, but ready to accept advertising layouts. The current web site receives 50,000 visits per week.
