Mustangs Annihilate Rappahannock, 53-25, Prepare for Manassas By Mike Hume
The George Mason High School girls basketball team wasted little time in trying to reassert themselves in the Bull Run District, leaping out to a 16-1 lead en route to storming past Rappahannock last Friday night.
In total, the Mustangs piled on 53 points, 28 of which came from players in the post, en route to a 53-25 landslide victory. Senior Alex Pender led the inside attack with nine points, while Lena Griffin added eight.
“There were really not standouts in this game,” Mason Head Coach Dan Wilkie said. “It was a very good, balanced attack. We set a goal for our post players to score at least 25 points and they scored 28.”
Freshman Meredith Hamme and junior Maggie O’Toole each scored eight points and senior Katerina Zissios chipped in with seven. Sophomore Ashley Thompson led the efforts on the glass, with five rebounds.
The Mustangs next face Manassas Park at home Friday at 7:45 p.m. Mason breezed past Manassas 59-27 at Manassas in an earlier game this season.
Manassas’s strength lies in their physical play, something that Wilkie said his team will prepare for this week.
“A key goal when playing a physical team, is to keep our fouls to a minimum, which we hope to do Friday,” Wilkie said. “Other than that I expect a high score for the Mustangs in front of their home crowd.”
