Falls Church Boys Top Jefferson 49-46 McLean Girls Skate Past South Lakes

By Mike Hume

Falls Church Boys

Jaguars’ Head Coach Antonio Davis wanted to purge the earlier loss to Thomas Jefferson from his memory, and last Friday’s 49-46 victory is certainly a step in the right direction.

Junior Chris Edwards led Falls Church with 11 points, while senior James Gannon scored nine. Juniors Chris Jerro and Max Hurkamp each scored eight points, while junior Phillip Latham chipped in with seven.

Tuesday night, the Jaguars were less fortunate, falling 60-45 to Yorktown. Edwards again led the way with 11 points, while senior Torrean Alexander added eight. Jerro and Gannon scored seven each.

After the two game split, Falls Church’s record now stands at 5-9 (4-3 in the National District).

Falls Church Girls

Thomas Jefferson and Yorktown dealt Falls Church consecutive losses last week. The Lady Jags fell last Friday to the Colonials 62-41 and then 48-34 to the Patriots on Tuesday.

Senior Whitney Stan led all scorers with 16 points against Yorktown to go along with eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the tough district foe. Sophomore Karla Cortez added six points. Falls Church will search for its second win of the season Friday at 7:45 p.m. at home against Wakefield.

J.E.B. Stuart Boys

Coming off a heartbreaking loss to rival Falls Church, Stuart responded with a 52-39 victory over Mt. Vernon on Jan. 11. The offense was led by Derrick Bowman with 16 points while Darren Hammond hauled down 13 rebounds to dominate the paint.

The Raiders couldn’t carry on the momentum of their second district victory of the season however, dropping their next two games to Wakefield 80-60 and to Edison 70-47.

Junior Dionte Beatty led the Raiders with 20 points against Wakefield, while senior Jonathan Sok scored 12, and juniors Nader Shehadeh and Johnny Wang added 10 points each. With the win and two losses, Stuart’s record now stands at 4-9 (2-4).

J.E.B. Stuart Girls

After earning their first win of the season Dec. 18, the Stuart girls are still looking to get back into the win column. Last week was not a kind one to the Lady Raiders, as they lost match ups with Wakefield 58-30 and Edison 60-16.

Sophomore Betty Appiah led Stuart against Wakefield with 13 points, while senior Amanda Thompson added five in last Friday’s contest. The Lady Raiders next travel to Washington and Lee on Friday for a 7:45 p.m. game.

McLean Boys

The Highlanders have dropped two games since their victory over rival Langley, falling to South Lakes Friday 62-53 and losing in overtime to Lee 46-43 Tuesday night.

Junior Brendan McCook and sophomore James Pascoe scored 20 and 14 points respectively. Senior Basem Ammoury contributed seven rebounds and five assists and junior Josh Shapiro added seven boards as well.

McCook again led the way against Lee, but this time could only mount 12 points, while Shapiro added 10. Pascoe contributed nine in the loss. Mclean (2-11, 1-5 Liberty District) next faces Marshall at home Friday at 7:30 p.m.

McLean Girls

The Lady Highlanders split their two games this past week, defeating South Lakes 50-31 on Friday before falling in overtime to Lee 41-37 Tuesday night.

Virginia Altmeyer led the offense with 11 points against South Lakes. Altmeyer then scored eight points Tuesday against Lee, while teammate Ashleigh Cole scored 10. Following the split, Mclean stands at 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the district. The Lady Highlanders next face district-leading Marshall away Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Marshall Boys

The Statesmen slipped slightly last Friday, falling 42-36 at W.T. Woodson. Junior Daniel Dixon led the offense with 13 points, while junior Ian Wisecarver added 11. Both Dixon and Wisecarver pulled down five rebounds as well in the loss.

Marshall got back in the win column Tuesday against Langley, prevailing 59-47 on the strength of offensive performances by seniors Alex Shek (13 points) and Bilal Ahmad (14 points, five rebounds). Dixon again played a large role with 11 points and five assists. The win improves the Statesmen’s record to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the National District good for third place behind South Lakes and district-leading W.T. Woodson.

Marshall travels to McLean Friday at 7:30 p.m.
