The McLean Blaze girls fastpitch softball teams will hold tryouts for their 10-under and 12-under teams Sunday, Jan. 16 in the gym at Westgate Elementary School in McLean from 1 – 4 p.m. Tryouts themselves will last about 90 minutes. The Falls Church-Kiwanis Little League is currently seeking youth and adult umpires for the Spring season. All training and equipment will be provided. Training classes are scheduled to start in the new few weeks. Youth umpires are paid based on the number of games officiated. While on the topic of sports hires, George C. Marshall High School is looking for assistant crew coaches to help grow the program for the 2004-05 season. The positions are effective Feb. 22. Those interested should send notice to gcmcrew@cox.net or contact Nan Baker at 703-242-2347.
There will be a Life Line Screening at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Falls Church, Monday, Feb. 21, to perform preventative health screenings including ultrasound screenings for stroke, abdominal aneurysms and arterial disease, as well as osteoporosis screenings. Individual tests cost $35 to $45 each, with special pricing available for those who take several tests. St. Luke’s is located at 7628 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church.
Corpus Christi School in Falls Church, Va. will hold an open house Monday, Jan. 31 at both campuses, which accepts students from preschool through eighth grade. The open house will be from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Elementary School campus in Bailey’s Crossroads and from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Early Childhood Center located off Route 50 and Graham Road. Registration for the 2005-06 school year opens to the public Monday, Feb. 7. For further information call 703-820-7450 x 16.
Delegate Jim Scott takes part in two town meetings on Jan. 15, first attending the McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean) at 10 a.m. along with Delegate Vince Callahan and State Senator Janet Howell. Scott then moves on to the Falls Church Community Center (223 Little Falls St., Falls Church) at 1 p.m. where State Senator Mary Margaret Whipple will also attend.
Another public forum on the horizon is Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust speaks to the Falls Church Task Force on Open Space in the F.C. Community Center (223 Little Falls St., Falls Church). The public is invited to learn how Conservation Easements can benefit the city and individual land owners.
So you want to help the Girl Scouts out, but you’re afraid that those cookies might not be Atkins or South Beach approved? No problem, purchase them for the troops serving in Iraq. Cookies are $3.50 and delivery is scheduled for Feb. 20.
The Dunn Loring Rotary honors the Volunteer Speakers Bureau of Brain Injury Services at a luncheon from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14 at J.R. Stockyards at Tysons Corner. The group of individuals who themselves are survivors of brain injuries, have extended themselves to the community and to other victims of brain injury by providing information and education.
The George Washington Birthplace National Memorial celebrates its 75th anniversary after becoming the first national park east of the Mississippi River on Jan. 23, 1930 with celebration that will include a talk by College of William and Mary doctoral candidate Seth Bruggeman at 2 p.m. For information on the site, as well as directions to the event, visit www.nps.gov/gewa.
Two families in the McLean First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints each will have three children serving full-time missions simultaneously for the Church. Mark and Melody Dickson have two sons and a daughter currently serving full-time missions. Their daughter Camilla entered the Missionary Training Center of Tuesday en route to her mission in Puerto Rico. Their son, Devin, is currently working in the California San Francisco Mission and their other son, Spencer, is in the Brazil Fortaleza Mission.
