Mason High Boys Basketball Looks for Better Days in 2005

By Mike Hume

The George Mason High School boys varsity basketball team closed out 2004 on a down note, dropping three games at the Fauquier/Liberty Tournament. The three losses drop the Mustangs’ record to 2-8 on the season.

Mason kicked off the tourney with a match up against host Fauquier High. The Mustangs hung close through halftime, but couldn’t cut into the double-digit lead established early in the second half, ultimately falling 69-57. Junior Travis Greene led the team with 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior Will Straub added eight points and 11 boards to go with two blocks. Freshman Mike Schwengel and senior Robert Kuhn added nine an seven points respectively.

The second game boded little better for Mason as the size of the Massapanox team wore them down. The Mustangs cut the lead to four in the second quarter, but drew no closer, as their opposition pulled away to a 42-24 halftime lead, en route to a 79-53 final. Colin Molano led Mason scorers with 10 points to go along with six assists, while Sam Ehsani (seven points) and Straub (six rebounds) also contributed in the loss to the AAA school.

Any attempt to salvage a victory in the tournament’s third game against AAA Stafford High was squelched early on as the Mustangs fell behind 18-4 to start the game. Greene again led Mason scorers with nine points along with 10 rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Schwengel added six points and three assists while Sean Dawson contributed six points. Straub again was a force on the boards with eight to go with his five points.

There was a glimmer of good fortune for Mason as Greene was later named to the All-Tournament Team. The Mustangs sought to right their ship Wednesday night as they traveled to Bull Run District Opponent Manassas Park. Manassas will be just the third Single A school the Mustangs have faced so far this season. Results were not available by press time. Mason returns home to host Madison County Friday at 7:30 p.m.
