Watch Night, New Year's Eve, Downtown Falls Church, 8 p.m. to Midnight on Friday, Dec. 31.

This plethora of small events adds up into something that is, by now, no longer corny but quite charming and compelling. I've always liked it, but maybe that's because I can do corny. Now, with the excellent restaurants on all sides and genuine, professional entertainment venues like the State Theatre and Bangkok Blues in the neighborhood, the many events, from the moon bounce, climbing rock and karaoke stage to the special tent with a sequence of fine performers, the entire thing is declared officially "in." Your presence will be a plus for the kind of "new you" you plan to shape in the New Year. Besides, it's safe, close to home and cheap.
