Hoover Takes First in Md Tourney

By John Pitas

Led by Willie Hoover’s first place finish in the 152-lb weight class, the George Mason HS wrestling team placed sixth out of 15 teams this past weekend at the Meade Invitational Tournament held at Fort Meade High Sschool in Maryland. Also on the medalists podium at the end of the day were Nick Pitas (125) and John Sullivan (171) who both placed second in their classes, and Bob Bumgarner (160) in seventh place. For the first time since the Mustangs began entering this tournament seven years ago, they sent three wrestlers to the finals and Hoover came away with the school’s first ever individual championship with a one minute 35 second pin of his opponent. The varsity will be in action again this Friday and Saturday at Hermitage High School in Richmond in a 32-team tournament.

The JV squad was particularly impressive this weekend in a JV tournament also at Meade, coming away with four championships and a third place finish. Joseph Kendra, Ramsey Hanna, Barratt Kennett, and Rick Schumann each won their weight classes and Andy Millar came in third for the Mustangs.
