FCEF Nod to First Grant RecipientsBy Nicholas F. Benton
The new Falls Church Education Foundation announced its first-ever grants to Falls Church City School programs this week. Three school projects were awarded a total of $5,000 in the groundbreaking competitive grant cycle.
The FCEF funded projects were:
The George Mason High School's team participation in an annual national competition to design and construct a robot to perform selected tasks.
A "reality science" project in which students identify a scientific area of interest to study, carry out research and document their efforts, presenting their results in a formal venue.
An inclusive "Early Childhood Parenting Education" program offered to parents of pre-school children using the discipline-oriented Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program the same as the Cooperative Discipline approach used by Mt. Daniel Elementary teachers in the classroom.
The three programs selected for grants by the FCEF Grant Review Committee were chosen from seven applications submitted by Falls Church school teachers and administrators for the Oct. 15 deadline.
The FCEF is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization established in 2003 to provide supplemental support for the Falls Church City Public School System. To this end, the FCEF is engaged in a five-year campaign to build a $10 million permanent endowment fund.
