Mustangs Run Well at State Meet
The George Mason High School cross country team turned in strong showings at the State Meet last Wednesday, with the girls team placing fourth overall and two of Mason’s male runners finishing in the top 20.
“The course was muddy and it was windy so the times were off for everyone on all the teams,” Head Coach Julie Bravin said. “Our top three girls ran together the whole race, pushing up hills and working together. It was awesome.”
Sophomore Agnes Ek, freshman Susanna Sullivan, and junior Sarah Sullivan placed 18th, 19th and 20th respectively to power the Mustangs to their fourth place finish. The three just missed All-State honors, which only includes the top 15 finishers. Sophomore Emma Goetz finished 39th, while junior Emily Walden placed 48th, freshman Nikki Williamson came in 50th and junior Kristin Schwind 54th. As a team Mason’s girls finished just behind first place finisher Clarke County, Central High School and Floyd High School.
The Mustangs representatives on the boys side fared well for themselves, with senior Jon Byers placing 15th to earn All-State honors. Counterpart John Sullivan just missed All-State status, finishing 18th.
