George Mason High School Volley Ball Loses Finale, Prepares for District Tournament By Mike Hume
The George Mason High School volleyball team’s season came to a close last night, losing in the first round of the Bull Run District Tournament to Madison County. The Mustangs faced an uphill battle, qualifying as the final seed in the district and thus having to play the No. 3 seed in a Madison gym packed with supporters. While Mason played well and the lead changed hands five times or more in each game, but ultimately fell 25-22, 25-20, 25-20.
“I’m really proud of our girls,” Mason Head Coach Barb Mahony said. “Every player contributed to this team effort.”
Sabrina Whitney and Katie Mitchell both had double digit stats in hitting, serving and passing. Whitney and Roxy Sweeney combined for over 85-percent accuracy on their sets. Katie Turner and Annie Zweighaft had their highest total number of hits for the season. Christie Ankeney and Britanny Head led the defense in passing while Emma O’Hara and Pam Kryschtal added some key blocks.
“Sophia de St. Aubin and Maddie Kaplow came off the bench to help keep us in the game,” Mahony added.
The squad ought to be much tougher next season, given that it currently features five sophomores and one freshman in its starting lineup.
