Mason Footbal Drops Madison

By Mike Hume

George Mason High School 27 - Madison County 6

After falling behind 6-0 in the second quarter, the George Mason High School Mustangs rallied against division rival Madison County and struck back with 27 unanswered points to claim victory in their first district contest of the season.

Mason (3-3, 1-0 district) capitalized on a Madison County (2-4, 0-1) fumble in the second quarter to pull ahead 13-7 on a 16-yard touchdown run by Travis Greene, but the Mustangs put the nail in the proverbial coffin shortly thereafter. Pinned on their own one yard line, Mustang running back Stephen Williams busted through the defensive line and sprinted past the secondary for an 80-yard gain, setting up a 15-yard touchdown run of his own to close out the half. The extra-point by Gregg Curtin gave the Mustangs a 20-6 lead at the break.

Coming out of the break, a six-yard pass from quarterback Eric Blush to John Schwengel capped yet another Mustang scoring drive and with another Curtin extra-point kick, accounted for the final margin of 27-6.

“Any district win, in our district, is a significant win,” Mason Head Coach Tom Horn said. “When you play as well as we did tonight you give yourself a chance to win big games.”

Williams, who also scored the first touchdown for Mason on a three-yard push up the middle, ran wild for 207 yards on 25 carries, while Greene added 50 yards on 13 touches. The speedy Schwengel compiled 64 yards on 18 carries in addition to his scoring reception. Blush only needed to go to the air five times in the game, completing two of those passes for 18 yards.

Conversely, Mason stuffed the Madison rushing attack, allowing just 35 total yards on the ground, but did yield 168 yards to the passing game. However, the Mustangs picked off the opposing QB four times to halt any scoring threats.

“At times we are a tremendous defensive team,” Horn said of his squad who hasn’t give up a rushing touchdown since the third quarter of Week Two. “But at times we look dazed and confused.”

The Mustangs had a new look on defense as Mike Isom earned his first varsity start at cornerback. “Mike was a big plus tonight,” Horn said. “His ability to play in the secondary has allowed us to move some folks into positions where they are more comfortable.”

Mason now prepares for its homecoming game against district foe Rappahannock Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“We’ve put ourselves in a difficult position with a couple of bad losses,” Horn said. “But we’ll get back to work this week and see what happens.”
