Statesmen Start Winning Streak; Mason, FCHS, Stuart Set Back

By Mike Hume

Oakton H.S. – 58, Falls Church H.S. – 20

The Jaguars suffered another rough loss Friday at the hands of Oakton. Senior running back Eddie Robinson turned in another solid game, posting 115 yards on 19 carries, and another 20 yards on three receptions. But those fine stats were not enough to stand up to the Oakton offensive onslaught. Senior quarterback James Gannon completed six of 12 passes, but for just 26 yards, before giving way to junior quarterback Joey Collins. Collins completed two of four passes for 33 yards including a touchdown to R.J. Davis. Before leaving the game, Gannon also rushed for a one-yard touchdown.

While the Jags have suffered as a team this season, their spread offense has landed three of their players among the top regional performers this season.

Gannon currently ranks eighth in passing yardage, completing 59 of 106 passes on the season for 770 yards and seven touchdowns against just two interceptions. Receivers Davis and Sahr Jalloh have also benefited and are third and eighth respectively in the region in receptions. Davis has 25 catches for 210 yards and one touchdown this season, while Jalloh has 19 receptions for 308 yards and five scores.

Jefferson H.S. – 45, Stuart H.S. – 9

After nearly prevailing a week earlier, Jefferson squelched any hope of an upset with a decisive offensive explosion. Stuart managed as best they could, with quarterback Dionte Beatty completing 10 of 19 passes for 68 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Sam Parelhoff.

Todd Osborne led the ground attack with 102 yards on 15 carries. Logan Ricarrio hauled in three passes for 19 yards. The Raiders are still searching for their first win as they travel to Edison Friday night.

Goochland H.S. – 19, George Mason H.S. – 14

The Mustangs fell beneath a fourth-quarter rally by the Goochland Bulldogs beneath the lights of Moore Cadillac Stadium Friday night. George Mason High School enjoyed a 14-7 lead at the half, but twelve unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters gave the win to Goochland.

Junior Travis Greene scored both touchdowns on the ground for Mason.

The loss drops the Mustangs record to 2-3 on the season. GMHS will look to rebound Friday in a district match up at home against Madison County.
