By Mike Hume

The George Mason High School volleyball team split a pair of home district games this past weak topping Manassas Park last Thursday, but losing to Madison County in a tight contest Tuesday night.

The Mustangs snapped up their first district victory of the season with the four-game victory over Manassas Park, 25-14, 25-15, 22-25, 28-26. Katie Mitchell led the way with seven service aces, while Roxy Sweeney added four. Mitchell, Annie Zweighaft, Brittany Head and Sabrina Whitney combined for 10 blocks. Katie Turner led Mason with 12 hits, with Mitchell right behind with 11. Meanwhile, Turner and Christine Ankeney turned in solid defensive performances with 18 digs.

Tuesday night Mason lost a very tight match against district opponent Madison Country, with the lead changing five times in the final game alone. Ultimately Madison prevailed 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20. The Mustangs were rallying in the third game, when Turner went down with a foot injury. She was ably replaced by Zweighaft and Emma O’Hara, but the momentum slipped away from Mason. Whitney, Head, Sweeney, Turner, Mitchell and Ankeney each had two service aces, while freshman Maddie Kaplow chalked up her first service ace.

The Mustangs match up at home against district leading Clarke County Thursday night. Mason’s record currently stands at 4-7 overall (1-2 in the district). It’s the team’s best start in six years.
