Statesmen Start Winning Streak; McLean, FCHS, Stuart Set Back

By Mike Hume

Marshall H.S. – 7, W&L H.S. – 6

A week after snapping the longest losing skid for a AAA school in the state, Marshall has strung together a winning streak.

The Statesmen blocked what would have been the game-tying extra-point with twenty seconds remaining in the game to hang on against Washington and Lee and improve their record to 2-1.

Senior running back Brandon Wallace rushed for 53 yards on 18 carries including the Statesmen’s only touchdown. Marshall attempts to push its winning streak to three games Friday at Langley High School at 7:30 p.m.

Yorktown H.S. – 39, McLean H.S. – 7

The McLean Highlanders were riding high on cloud nine after a 2-0 start to the season. But Friday night the Yorktown Patriots brought the Highlanders back down to earth with a lopsided 39-7 home loss Friday. An athletic Yorktown team managed to break open several huge runs to move the ball offensively and intercepted McLean quarterback J.D. Oldenburg four times to stifle any comeback attempts.

Oldenburg finished the day completing four of 15 pass attempts for 50 yards.

McLean was able to establish a solid rushing attack, but only managed to reach the end zone once on a run by Erik Smith. Smith carried the ball 17 times for 132 yards. Bill Corey had 15 carries for 70 yards. Thomas Haffey had two receptions for 18 yards while, Neal Gillies had one for 21 yards.

McLean will attempt to bounce back Friday at Madison at 7:30 p.m.

Madison H.S. – 21, Falls Church H.S. – 14

Edison H.S. – 34, Fall Church H.S. – 14

The Jaguars dropped a pair of games this past week dropping their record to 1-3 on the year.

Last Wednesday, Sept. 22, a late Madison touchdown broke a 14-14 tie to hand Falls Church its first loss of the regular season.

The Jaguars spotted their opponent an early 14-point lead but rallied behind the arm of senior quarterback James Gannon to knot the contest. Utilizing the spread offense, Gannon completed 15 of 32 passes for 215 yards, including two touchdowns to senior Sahr Jalloh. Jalloh seemed to be Gannon’s preferred target on the day, catching the ball seven times for 106 yards. Junior R.J. Davis caught four balls for 34 yards, while Max Hurrkamp and Jose Perez each added receptions for 23 and 15 yards respectively. Senior running back Eddie Robinson carried the ball nine times for 62 yards to go along with two receptions for 37 yards.

Darnell Pendleton led the defensive effort with 20 total tackles.

Monday night the Jaguars simply couldn’t capitalize when they got inside the Edison 20-yard line. Robinson exploded for 174 yards rushing and another 37 receiving, but the Jaguars couldn’t covert, failing to come away with points four times when they had the ball in the red zone. Robinson accounted for one Jaguar touchdown, while Jalloh hauled in a pass from Gannon for the other F.C. score. Gannon completed 11 of 24 passes for 137 yards. Jalloh finished with 45 yards on three receptions, while R.J.Davis caught the ball five times for 53 yards.

Senior Mohammed Khatib led Falls Church with 12 tackles.

The Jaguars travel to Jefferson Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Annandale H.S. – 45, Stuart H.S. – 0

The Raiders’ scoreless streak reached three games and accordingly their record slipped to 0-3. The Atoms scored 45 unanswered points to cruise to their second victory of the season.

Senior quarterback Dionte Beatty completed four of 21 passes for 40 yards, but was picked off three times by the defense. Senior running back Ricarrio Logan carried the ball seven times for 21 yards in the loss.

Stuart will look to break into the win column Friday in its Homecoming match up with Washington and Lee at 7 p.m.
