GMHS Freshmen, JV Whip WMHS

By Dave Schwengel

Last Wednesday night a combined George Mason High School Freshman and JV football squad visited William Monroe High School and beat the combined Monroe Freshman and JV squad 41 – 6. The lopsided score was surprising since William Monroe is an AA-sized school and Mason is an A-sized school.

It was a normal game in all respects except both coaching staffs had to balance playing time between the Freshman and JV squads. Mason had noticeably more players than Monroe, needing two busses to transport 40 players. The Mason coaching staff was generally pleased with the results.

According to Mason head coach LaBryan Thomas and assistant coach Andre Jackson the game was an opportunity to get needed playing time for Mason’s JV players, who usually suit up for varsity games but don’t play much. But also it was an opportunity for the Freshman players to learn by watching the JV players who are more experienced and disciplined in Mason’s system.

The chronological order of Mason’s offensive outburst is as follows: senior Nils Ek scored on a 55-yard touchdown run; freshmen Michael Schwengel scored on a 53-yard touchdown run; sophomore Kevin Montgomery returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown; sophomore quarterback Will Stewart connected with sophomore grader Alex Goetting on a 40-yard touchdown pass; freshman quarterback Mike Straub connected with eighth grader Arthur Wilson on a 20-yard touchdown pass; Goetting scored again on a 55-yard touchdown run. Wilson successfully booted five point-after-touchdown attempts.
