Falls Church News & Notes
While Falls Church looks forward to the start of the Fall sports season and the inaugural night game at George Mason High School’s Moore Cadillac Stadium this Friday, some Mustang alumni are taking the field for their respective college teams as well.
Last week former Mustang goalie Alex Fatovic returned to Virginia with the Long Island University soccer team to play in the Virginia Soccer Classic against the University of Virginia and University of Maryland.
Mason Assistant Soccer Coach Frank Spinello watched Peter Dittmar play in Barton College’s pre-season match against Elon College. Spinello reports that the former Mustang sweeper was the first defender off the bench and played well (and about half the match) in the 2-2 tie.
Spinello also saw former Mason girls soccer standout Becky Roa play in Mars Hill’s first game of the year. Coming off the bench, Roa stole the spotlight, scoring the game-winning goal in Mars Hill’s 1-0 victory.
Two more seniors from last year’s state-champion teams, Alison Penland and Pete Hamill, have made the teams at the University of Tampa and Roanoke College respectively.
Another former Mustang athlete, Allison Farrow, a freshman at Randolph-Macon, has also made the women’s soccer team.
Dr. John S. Langford of Falls Church, founder and CEO of Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, received a pair of honors recently, being named “Virginia’s Small Business Person of the Year 2004” by the U.S. Small Business Association’s Richmond, Va. Office and “Virginia’s Outstanding Industrialist 2004” by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Congratulations to Dr. Langford.
Local car wash Clean Machine (3013 Gallows Rd.) is inviting the Falls Church community to join them on Sept. 18 when they participate in Wash U.S.A. a charity event to aid the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.
