Mustangs Net Win at Liberty

By Mike Hume

With each game the George Mason High School volleyball team inched closer to success last weekend, and in the last of three matches of the Liberty-Fauquier Volleyball Classic Tournament the Mustangs defeated North Stafford, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.

The tournament started on a sour note for the Mustangs, falling to Liberty in straight sets, 25-18, 25-12, 25-21. Head Coach Barbara Mahony was pleased with her team’s performance despite the end result.

“Liberty was the district champion last year and I think we sure held our own,” Mahony said. “We learned a huge lesson in how fast that game can move.”

Mason matched up with Stafford in the second contest, narrowly losing in five sets. Stafford took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-12, but the Mustangs rallied to take the third and fourth sets 25-17 and 25-14 behind the hitting of Katie Mitchell and Katie Turner off sets from Sabrina Whitney. Mason battled in the fifth game, but fell 15-11.

With victory within their grasp against Stafford, the Mustangs refused to let the win against North Stafford slip away. Mason topped its opponent in four sets, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Whitney was named to the All-Tournament team. The Mustangs continue their season tonight at 5:45 p.m. at National Catholic.
