Falls Church News & NotesThe Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is seeking volunteers to teach adults to read and write English. Tutors will be trained in workshops Saturday Sept 11., 18 and Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 2855 Annandale Road in Falls Church. The program costs $35 which will cover books and supplies. On Sept. 16 Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) of Northern Virginia will sponsor a session conducted by Laurie Chester titled “Best Foot Forward for School: Helping Your Child with Study and Organizational Skills.” The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Library of Fairfax High School (3500 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax). For more information visit CHADD on the web at www.novachadd.org. If you hear a knock on your door on Sept. 11 or 18, it just might be a member of the George C. Marshall High School band. The musicians will be going door to door throughout Vienna, Tyson’s Corner and Falls Church to seek donations for the band. This “Tag Day” event is the band’s primary source of funding. Donations are fully tax-deductible but if that’s the decisive factor in your giving you might need to reevaluate your soul. All money goes directly to the band for repair and replacement of instruments and equipment, instruction, special clinics, band uniforms and competitions fees. The band will participate in its first competition of the year Saturday, Oct. 2, with drum majors Jeff Genota and Christina Martinez leading the way along with field captain Clayton Bender, drum line captain Keith Anderson and flag captains Kim Farhood, Stephanie Miller, Hiwot Seife and Amanda Zirzow. Sept. 16 from 7 – 9 p.m. McLean Project for the Arts will hold the opening reception for their Fall exhibit titled “Incidents and Accidents/Hints and Allegories: David Douglas/Bill Dunlap/Erling Sjovold/Alyson Weege.” Curator Deborah McLeod will give a talk at 8 p.m. The McLean Project for the Arts is located on the second floor of the McLean Community Center 1234 Ingleside Ave. Hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday – Friday and Saturday from 1 – 5 p.m. The Project for the arts follows it up on Sept. 25 with the opening reception for “Gifted: Works by Steven Sommovigo — A Fond Remembrance” from 5 – 7 p.m. Curator Andrea Pollan’s talk begins at 6 p.m. The Falls Church Lacrosse Club is hosting a fall clinic on Saturdays from Sept. 18 through Nov. 13 for boys and girls grades 1-8. The two have been selected as finalists from nearly 400 entrants for The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards, a juried art competition produced by the Bethesda Arts and Entertainment District. The top prize winners will be announced and honored Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. with the Best in Show winner receiving $10,000.
