Mason Golf in First
By Dan McDonald
The George Mason High School golf team completed the month of August with a record of 5-1, tied for best in the district.
The team went to 4-0 by beating Madison at the Mustangs’ home course, Fairfax National, by over 25 strokes. The team traveled to Jackson’s Chase to face Strasburg at a course with greens rated a slippery 11 on the stimpmeter by USGA officials. The Mustangs had only one score in the 80’s with senior Dan McDonald’s 89. Senior Andy Walsh, junior Paul Mene, and sophomore Ben Lasso were close behind, but the team ended up falling short by 29 strokes to the Rams.
A week later, the team came back by beating Rappahanock in a 9-hole match at Fairfax National. Seniors Dan McDonald and Andy Walsh shot 42 and 46, respectively, while Sophomores Ben Lasso and Sean Follin shot 46 and 48 on the par-37 Bull Run Nine. The round marked the first time Sean Follin scored well enough to make the top four scores.
A shuffled playing order saw Paul Mene playing in 7th position, yet posting the score of the day with a 2-over 39. The team looks forward to the month of September with its newest member, junior Nick Pitas, joining the successful squad, which is also comprised of sophomore Andy Pribulka and freshman Imran Jaffer.
