Leading off this week’s News and Notes is Ashley Linda Byrd of Dun Loring, a junior at Gettysburg College, has made the Dean’s Commendation List by posting a quality point average above 3.33.

More kudos dealt out to Victor Gerrity, the son of Joseph G. Gerrity and Kathleen Doran of Falls Church, Va., who graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA) Middle School on June 3, 2004. Victor was part of the McLean soccer team, and also participated in lacrosse. He received “Perfect Attendance” honors and was named “Most Improved Student” in pre-algebra.

Eric Deschamps of Falls Church recently completed a 24-day Pacific Northwest Outdoor Educator course with the National Outdoor Leadership School. The expedition-style course explored Olympic National Park as well as the Leavenworth area of Washington State, teaching participants various outdoor skills including mountaineering.

Speaking of backpacking, well of a slightly different nature, ReedSmith LLP is planning its annual backpack drive to distribute backpacks and school supplies to more than 400 students at Graham Road Elementary School, Friday, July 30 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The Competition Swim Clinic is now accepting enrollment for its 2004-05 classes including the Spring “Core Speed” sprint training. The classes cover all four competitive strokes with “added emphasis on starts, turns and relay starts.” The classes will run the gamut of ability levels, ranging from Novice to Elite. Three members of “The Quiet Company” are making noise. Congratulations to Harry L. Thomas Jr., Mark H. Siciliano and Katherine B. Oser, all of the Falls Church area, for receiving recognition during the July 26 Northwestern Mutual Life Annual Meeting. Ms. Oser and Mr. Thomas both won the Emerald Award, while Mr. Siciliano was presented with the Diamond Award.

The John Kerry Campaign has announced the State Headquarters on 2722 Merrilee Dr. in Richmond will be fully operational shortly after the Democratic National Convention and are looking for donations of office supplies: chairs, bookcases, desks, clocks, TVs, paper, scissors, pencils, pens, hole punchers, whatever. The McLean Orchestra holds its annual Golden Baton Golf Classic, its third such event, on August 30 at TPC at Avenel.
