F.C. 11/12-Year-Olds Wrap Up District Run

WITH TWO FINAL GAMES LAST WEEK, the Falls Church-Kiwanis 11/12-Year-Old Little League All Star Team concluded its run through the District Tournament. On Thursday the squad lost a heart-breaker to Great Falls 4-3. Trailing by four runs in the sixth inning, Lansing Veeder and Greg Goldsmith both singled while Jordan Ghannam drew an eight-pitch walk to load the bases. After Veeder scored on a passed ball, Evans Mandes lined a two-strike pitch into center to score two runs and bring Falls Church within 180-feet of tying the game before the rally fell short. Goldsmith and Ghannam pitched for F.C., limiting Great Falls to their lowest offensive output of the tournament. Head Coach Mike Goldsmith lauded the defensive efforts of Andy O’Meara, Billy Ledder and Nicole Mitchell in the loss. Saturday, F.C. squad ended play on a positive note, topping McLean National 9-6. Veeder picked up his third win of the tournament, going six innings and allowing only one earned run. After McLean tied the game in the sixth, F.C. drove in three runs in the first extra inning to best the previously unbeaten McLean team. Paul Weber, James Essex, Richard Evans, Matt Palmieri and PJ Anderson all earned high marks for their contributions in the win. F.C. Red finished the tournament with a record of 4-2, with both losses by a mere one run. (Photos by Katie Mandes and News-Press)
