Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia has announced the enrollment of Stephen W. Twentyman, a graduate of George Mason High School. Twentyman will enroll as a Patrick Henry Scholar in August. Congratulations to Stephen.

You’re never to old to enjoy a spirited game of softball. The Northern Virginia Senior Softball is seeking players for teams forming a 32-game fall season. While average age in the NVSS is 65, but men ages 50 and up, and women ages 40 and up are accepted after a skill assessment. Players will be assigned to 24 teams spanning three skill-levels that will play Tuesday and Thursday mornings on Fairfax County fields. The league costs $35 and includes a free t-shirt and a hat. The Abigail Alliance for Better Access to Developmental Drugs, founded in memory of Abigail Burroughs, a 2001 George Mason High School Graduate who died of cancer, was pleased to see the FDA a new cancer office and cancer program. Despite the success, the Abigail Alliance continues to push for ways to get potentially life saving drugs to patients years earlier than they would normally become available. The Alliance sites that this recent change, and the pursuit of further changes, are directly linked to the Alliance’s work and lawsuit in conjunction with the Washington Legal Foundation. Graduate students from the University of Virginia are teaming up with students at Sleepy Hollow Elementary Schools to improve the young students’ readings skills. Students at Sleepy Hollow’s site-based summer school program are receiving extra tutoring help from 30 U. Virginia students working to fulfill their clinical experience requirement to become certified reading specialists.

The Fairfax Victim Assistance Network (VAN) is looking to train volunteers to work on its domestic and sexual abuse crisis hotline. The training will run from Oct. 2 – Dec. 1 on Wednesday evenings and two Saturdays. For more information, application or services, call the VAN hotline at 703-360-7273.

In political news, Congressman Jim Moran offered an amendment to the Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations bill that was accepted on July 14. The amendment would force Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, to give full transit benefits to Labor Department union employees. The transit benefit was made available to all federal employees in the National Capital Region (NCR) by the Clinton Executive Order 13150. Currently all federal employees in every federal agency in the NCR, except for unionized Labor Department employees, can receive a transit benefit of up to $100 per month for transportation to and from their place of employment.
