By Mike Hume
Running off a string of three victories, the Falls-Church 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team captured the District Title and advanced to the State Tournament to be held in Williamsburg, Va.
F.C./Annandale started their championship run with a 9-6 over Pioneer July 9, then downing Fairfax 8-5 a day later to advance to the championship game. James Lindamood won Game One on the mound, while Mark McQuay got the win in the second game. McQuay would later get the win in the Championship Game, coming on in relief of F.C./Annandale’s 11-10 victory over Pioneer, who climbed through the losers’ bracket for the championship berth..
The team keyed their offensive success on speed, combining 31 hits with 34 stolen bases during the three games.
Daniel Falkenstern (.714 AVG.), Keegan McAllister (.700 AVG., 7 SB, 6 R), Tom Pacheco (.500 AVG, 9 SB, 4 R), Peter Taylor (.500 AVG.), and Michael Ong (.375 AVG., 5 R, 5 SB) led the offensive efforts in the tournament.
With the two outs and the bases loaded, Pachecho singled a 2-0 pitch into right field to drive in the winning RBI in the bottom of the final inning in the championship game.
Katie Nolan, Zach Merrill, Zach Miller, Chris Wenberg and McAllister contributed their pitching talents throughout the course of the tournament as well.
The F.C./Annandale 13-year-olds begin their run at the State Tournament Friday, July 16.
