New Council Members to Be Sworn in July 1

By Nicholas F. Benton (nfbenton@fcnp.com)

As per the charter of the City of Falls Church, newly-elected City Council members will be sworn in and assume their duties on Thursday, July 1 at 8 p.m. in the Council chambers at City Hall.

The formal event, that will be accompanied by some speech making and a reception following, will mark the beginning of four year terms for three citizens selected in a municipal election on May 4. Incumbents Robin Gardner and Lindy Hockenberry will commence their second terms, and David Chavern will ascend to the Council for the first time.

The event also formally marks the end to four years' service on the Council by Ron Parson, who chose not to run for a second term.

Following the swearing in conducted by City Clerk Katherine Clarken Buschow, the newly-constituted Council will then call itself to order in order to elect its mayor and vice-mayor.

Dan Gardner is expected to be elected to his fourth two-year term as mayor and Marty Meserve is expected to be retained for her second term as vice-mayor.

A reception honoring the new Council and the service of Parson will be held at the Teen Center in the Community Center adjacent the City Council following the special Council session. The public is invited to both the special session and the reception.
