George Mason High Alums Return for 5th Year All-Class Reunion

This weekend, hundreds of George Mason High School alums will be driving, flying, and generally coming out of the woodwork to participate in a reunion event held by the school every five years.

The festivities will kick off Friday, with a reception for the ex-Mustangs at Don Beyer Volvo and an open house at the high school. At the open house, there will be an opportunity for every student that inhabited a Mason desk over the past 55 years, to catch up on old times.

Whether they’re relighting old flames or just checking on how their old buddies are faring, the weekend is sure to elicit laughter.

Along with old stories, the alumni will also be introduced to the latest George Mason news.

The reception on Friday is being hosted by the Falls Church Education Foundation. A non-profit organization, the foundation is working to establish a permanent endowment for Falls Church City Public Schools. The reception will be the first step in introducing alumni to their goal of providing the schools stable funds for the future.

The reception will have door prizes, as well as food and a hosted bar.

At the open house, former GMHS students will be invited to walk down the halls where they used to hang out with friends. They will be able to see the classrooms where they once sat, learning the wisdom that has helped prepare them for their lifetime of experiences. Wearing name tags, they will see how some of their old friends have changed, and, maybe, how some have stayed exactly the same.

The alumni will also be witness to the changes that have been made in the school. The new athletic fields stand behind the school, and now construction is underway of a new middle school. Others will still recognize their old haunts that haven’t changed that much since they walked off the stage with their diplomas.

In addition to the all-class celebration, individual classes will be holding their own reunions throughout the weekend. The class of 1995 had its reunion last weekend.

Finally, the weekend will culminate in a family picnic at Cherry Hill Park. The picnic begins at noon and is free to all. The community center will be open in the case of rain and vendors will be on hand to sell refreshments. Present and former GM band members will be entertaining the picnickers.
