Mustangs Claim Regional Title on Hardcourts

By Michael Cary

George Mason traveled to Randolph Henry High School for the Regional Championships last Saturday and in a match in which the team only lost three total games, swept the competition 5-0 to claim the Regional Title.

The win secured a place in the State Championships this weekend, held at Radford University. The Mustang roster for the weekend consists of freshman standout Alex Goetting, seniors Colin Ehmer, Luke Rabin and Ben Andrews, sophomore James An and junior Andrew Roller.

The No. 1 Mason doubles team, made up of Goetting and Ehmer, advanced to the State Championship in the individual competition with a victory last week. They will be competing against the best doubles teams in the state. Goetting lost his bid as a singles player in the individual competition, losing to a top-ranked player in the regional tournament

Following in the footsteps of a traditionally successful program, this year’s George Mason High School boys tennis team finished its regular season two weeks ago with a solid, 5-1 record. The team swept Clarke County, its only district rival, winning the first match 8-1 and the second match 9-0. Mason’s only loss came against AAA Chantilly, which won the match 6-3. The other two Mason victories came against McLean, whom the Mustangs edged 5-4, and regional rival Central Woodstock, whom the Mustangs beat 8-1.

Postseason play began last Tuesday with a rematch against Central. Riding the individual victories of Ehmer and Andrews, as well as An and Roller, and the doubles victory of Andrews and Roller, Mason posted a 5-2 victory and moved on to the Regional Championships.
