Greater Falls Church School Bulletin Board
Graduate to Perform on Syndicated Radio Show
Miranda Blakeslee, having just graduated from Falls Church High School last Thursday, will be performing on From the Top, the nation's most widely heard classical music program.
The taping of the syndicated public radio show takes place at Shenandoah University's Armstrong Concert Hall this Sunday in Winchester, Va as part of Shenandoah Performs, the 10-day classical music festival premiering on June 11 to be aired nationally this fall on approximately 250 stations. From the Top is Public Radio International's showcase for America's best young classical musicians, hosted by pianist Christopher O'Riley.
Miranda will play as the violist in the Columbia Quintet, a group of young musicians who share membership in the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. They will play the third movement of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet (a work for string quartet and clarinet). Also performing with Miranda will be Giancarlo Garcia, clarinet, age 17 from McLean, Va.; Rachelle Hunt, violin, age 18 from McLean, Va.; Emily Barkakati, violin, age 18 from N. Potomac, Md; and Lauren Hunt, cello, age 15 from McLean.
Miranda began viola study at age 6, a year after she began piano lessons. She has played all her life in orchestras-including the Falls Church High School orchestra--as well as in solo recitals, but only added intensive chamber music playing to her musical activities this year. While at school, she also ran and jumped for the track team.
Miranda will leave this fall to begin work toward a performance degree in viola at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.
Pimmit Hills Alternative High School Student Selected to 6
6-Week Internship Program
Luis Luendo of Pimmit Hills Alternative High School was one of seven students selected to participate in a new six-week internship program with the construction industry to learn about the opportunities available to them in the field.
Approximately 25 students applied for the internships, which will offer students the opportunity to learn about career options in the construction industry. Hosting companies are Manhattan Construction, HITT Contracting, Inc., Scott-Long Construction, R. W. Murray, M. C. Dean Electrical Contracting, Virginia Concrete Construction, and L. F. Jennings.
Prior to the start of the actual internships, the students participated in a six-week after-school program in which they learned workforce skills such as interviewing skills, resumé writing, and safety issues and received a general overview of the construction industry. During the internships, students will be able to see how all parts of the industry work and will be able to learn more about parts of the industry they are particularly interested in, the skills required to obtain positions with the company, and the training and education needed to reach those positions. During the final week of the internship, the students will work on the house under construction by students in FCPS' construction technology program in the Spring Hill area of McLean. The interns will be asked to provide feedback to the sponsoring companies once the internships are complete.
Cosponsoring the program with FCPS are the Workforce Investment Board, Northern Virginia Community College, and FutureForceNow.
Jackson Middle School Observes Anniversary Of Brown vs. Board Of Education
Luther Jackson Middle School was chosen by the Fairfax Bar Association (FBA) to host a special program on June 8 and 9 in observance of the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1954 ruling on Brown vs. Board of Education in conjunction with its Law Day activities.
Seventh grade history classes at Jackson, which began as a segregated school, hosted attorneys who gave an introduction of the Brown vs. Board of Education case. Students then divided into discussion groups and explored issues related to the 14th Amendment, and discussed equal protection under the law and the legality of numerous situations. Classes reconvened and the attorneys facilitated a dialogue among students.
Brown vs. Board of Education struck down laws segregating public schools, signaled the end of government-sponsored segregation, and helped launch the Civil Rights movement.
