Hat-tastic!

THOMAS JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY students gathered yesterday, to learn a little bit about business and a lot about helping others. Gathered around sewing machines and stacks of fabric, fifty TJ students, along with volunteers from the Falls Church Lion's Club, worked in assembly lines to sew hats for sick children, receiving treatment at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The work was part of the Glories Happy HATS workshop. Glories Happy HATS (Helping Adolescents To Succeed) was founded in 1997 with two goals: helping critically and chronically ill children, and promoting positive community involvement and development in youth. By participating in HATS workshops kids learn about the power they have to make something to help others. The homemade hats they make are given to sick children to inspire hope and positive thoughts and to help them heal. Thomas Jefferson Elementary School is one of 20 Northern Virginia sites (called Headquarters) that are working to produce 10,000 hats. Along with donating their time and effort, Thomas Jefferson students, together with the Falls Church Lion's Club and an anonymous donor, contributed $2,000 to help establish more Happy HATS Headquarters. The goal of Glories Happy HATS is to create networks of Headquarters that can provide homemade hats to all 351 Children's hospitals throughout the United States. (News-Press photo)
