By Mike Hume
Five girls and six boys from the George Mason High School track team qualified for the Regional Championships, many in more than one event, after strong performances at last Wednesday’s Districts.
Senior Niles Lashway and junior Chad O’Hara both won their individual events, capturing first place in the 300M hurdles and the 400M respectively. The two speedsters also comprised half of the 4x400M relay team, along with junior Ted Rowdybush and Jon Byers, which was crowned the district’s fastest after trimming a full seven seconds off their personal best time with a mark of 3:37.66.
Other top finishers for the Mustangs included Byers’ third-place finish in the 800M (2:07.21), junior John Sullivan’s third-place finish in the 3200M, and senior Luisa Fairfax’s pair of third-place finishes in the 1600M and the 3200M. Lashway also took second place in the 110M hurdles with a time of 15.84, just a quarter second behind the event’s winner.
Junior Sarah Stanley took sixth place in the shot put, freshman Agnes Ek took fourth in the 400M and sixth in the 100M, freshman Emma Goetz finished sixth in the 3200M and junior Melissa Womble took a pair of sixth place finishes in the 800M and the 1600M.
Rowdybush’s time of 57.40 placed him sixth in the individual 400M, .7 seconds behind teammate O’Hara. Senior Orie Bumgarner finished fourth in the 800M. Sullivan also took a sixth place finish in the 1600M.
The Regional Championships will be held this Saturday at Monticello High School in Charlottesville, VA.
