Mason H.S. Track Gears Up for Districts

By Mike Hume

While a small squad may limit the total points accumulated by the George Mason High School track team, many Mustangs will look to make a name for themselves in individual events at next Wednesday’s District Championship meet.

Senior Niles Lashway has already qualified for States with his time in the 300m hurdles, and is predicted to contend for the district championship in the 110m and 300m hurdles. Lashway also anchors the 4x400m relay team of juniors Chad O’Hara, Jon Byers and Ted Rowdybush that has never lost to a district foe. O’Hara will also challenge for the district title in the individual open 400m and has also competed 200m, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Senior Orie Bumgarner figures to be among those challenging for the crown in the 800m and also the 1600m.

Others to watch for include junior John Sullivan in the 1600m and 3200m, sophomore Bob Bumgarner in the triple jump, long jump and shot put, while senior Rahul Gupta leads the Mustangs in the shot put and discuss events.

For the girls’ squad, senior Louisa Fairfax has already qualified for States wither her times in the 1600m and 3200m and should challenge for the district crown in both events. The 4x400m team of freshmen Agnes Ek, Elsa Lee and Margaret Lipman, and junior Leah Clark should prove effective, as should the girls in their individual events. Meanwhile on the field portion of the team, junior Sarah Stanley is excelling at the shot put and discuss. Junior Melissa Womble in the 1600m and 800m, sophomore Marie-Louise Jensen in the 200m, and freshmen Emma Goetz and Alicia Hartstack in the 3200m also should figure prominently in Wednesday’s races.
