Jags Fall in Semis, 9 Players Honored by District Coaches

By Mike Hume

The Falls Church Boys High School team lost failed to hold on to a 4-1 halftime lead and was eliminated by Yorktown last night in the semi-finals of the National District Tournament by the score of 11-6.

“It was a story of two halves and two different teams,” Falls Church Head Coach Steven Sheetz said. “The wheels just fell off the wagon.”

The contest Wednesday was a rematch of a regular season 2-1 goalie duel, ultimately won by the Jaguars. This time Yorktown goalie Andrew Jaffie, the National District defensive player of the year, stood on his head to lead his team past the Jaguars.

“He was just sensational, I can’t say enough good things about him,” Sheetz said of Jaffie. “He had to have made 20-25 saves, easy.”

The loss is not the end of the line for the Jags who will find out their draw for the regional tournament next Wednesday.

In brighter news, the National District coaches rewarded Falls Church High School for its best-ever regular season district finish (5-1) by placing nine players on the All-National District First and Second teams, and naming Head Coach Steven Sheetz Coach of the Year.

Attackman James Gannon, midfielder Peter Frazier and defenseman Mike Jerdak were among the district’s top 18 players named to the first team, while attackman Eric Bruyette, midfielders Louis Delma and James Hill, defenseman Larry Oden, long stick middie Robert Adams and goalie Andrew Nguyen received second team honors.
