Mustangs Top Rappahannock, Fall to Seton

By Mike Hume

The George Mason High School girls’ soccer team entered Tuesday’s match having won three games in a row, including an 8-0 thrashing of district foe Rappahannock. Early in the second half Tuesday, it appeared the Mustangs were on their way to another victory with a 3-1 lead. But as the minutes ticked away in the second frame, the Mustangs momentum slowly ebbed, and Mason watched as Seton rallied back to win 4-3 at Moore Cadillac Field Tuesday.

Following a brilliant save by goalie Alex Pender, the Mustangs’ fortunes shifted following a converted Seton penalty kick brought the score to 3-2 with 28 minutes remaining. That goal was a harbinger of things to come, as Pender appeared shaken up, and less than three minutes later left the game with a bruised calf after another Seton blast found the back of the net to tie the game at three. Roxanne Sweeney took over in net and Pender could only watch as Seton scored the winning marker with just over 18 minutes remaining. Jessie Porzel scored two goals with Katelyn Freeman providing the third Mustang marker.

Last Friday’s game against Rappahannock told a different tale, with the Mustangs recording 20 shots on goal and eight goals including a hat trick by freshman Katie Turner and two goals from Rebecca Roa, who returned from recent injuries. Alison Penland, Sarah Greenberg and Freeman all added singles. GMHS next plays Friday at home against Manassas Park.
